Ruth Filby Kirsopp, 66, passed away on November 30, 2023, from natural causes. She was a 58- year
resident of the Baton Rouge area and an LSU graduate with a Masters Degree in Deaf Education. Interment service will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, La. on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 2 pm. A memorial service will be held at Crosby Brethren Church, 5202 First St., Crosby, Texas on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at 1 pm.

Miss Ruth, as she was known to her students, had a long career teaching handicapped students. She first taught Severe and Profound Handicapped children in East Baton Rouge Parish followed by more than 25 years at the Louisiana School for the Deaf. At LSD, she was awarded Teacher of the Year. Miss Ruth was very involved and supportive of her students by coaching cheerleading, powerlifting, and volleyball, leading 4H Club and Girl Scouts, and providing hands-on science kits.

Ruth loved her horses, cats, and dogs. With her soft heart, she couldn’t turn away a stray. Always a teacher, she gave riding lessons including lessons on cattle sorting. She loved to compete in cattle sorting and won several championships.

Ruth is survived by her mother Mary Ann Gwin of Kingwood, Texas, her sister Carol Szczukowsky of Germany, her sister Roberta Kirsopp of Crosby, Texas, her nephew Justin Kibbe and his wife Libby of Houston, Texas, her nephew Austi Palmer of Crosby, Texas, her stepmother Kay Kirsopp of Lafayette, Louisiana, and cousins and friends.
