Gariel “Bud” King, age 85, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025. A proud patriot, devoted family man, car enthusiast, and tireless public servant, Bud lived a full life rooted in love, laughter, service, and craftsmanship. Bud was a New Orleans Native and became a resident of St. Amant later in life.

Bud served in the United States Army and spent nearly three decades as a firefighter for the City of New Orleans, retiring as Captain of Engine 33 in 1998 after 29 years of dedicated service. He was a committed Mason and Shriner, well-known for his giving heart and joyful spirit—particularly in his role as Santa Claus/St. Nicholas, where he donated countless hours bringing smiles to children in hospitals, schools, and churches.

Those who knew Bud will remember him not just for his strong work ethic, but for his sense of humor. He was a jokester through and through—rarely serious, always ready with a laugh, a prank, or a funny story. His light-hearted nature made him a joy to be around and left lasting memories for everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Bud was happiest working with his hands. Whether building, repairing, or crafting, he had an incredible gift for fixing just about anything. His skill was only matched by his generosity in sharing it. He also had a deep love for classic cars—he loved researching them, admiring them, and looked forward to attending Cruisin’ the Coast when he could.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Clementine M. King; his father, Andrew K. King; his wife of 52 years, Mary-Lee King; stepdaughter, Ava Guillory (Robert); and his loyal canine companion, Kash.

Bud is survived by his loving wife, Mollie Bussell; his daughter, Michelle King; stepdaughters, Coca Love (Dennis) and Misty Pardee (Duke); stepson, Ryan Bussell; his brother, Wayne “Jim” King (Charlene); and sister, Virgie Brandstetter.

He leaves behind a proud legacy through his grandchildren: Christy-Lynn Young, Kayla Kennedy (Chase), Charles Collins II, Justin Walker, Robert Guillory II, Lauren Poret (Nicholas), Abbagale Parker, Kacie Hatsfelt (Cain), Alyssa Reynolds (Casey), and Rhett Bussell. He was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren—with one more on the way.

Bud’s presence, humor, and unwavering commitment to others will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Masonic Service will be held at the Progressive Lodge #262, 3865 W Airline Hwy, Reserve, LA, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 1:00 pm.
