Dr. Alvin Francis DeCuir Sr., a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, educator, veteran, and man of unwavering faith, peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the age of ninety.
Born on November 17, 1935, to the late Frank DeCuir Sr. and Bernadette Ethel DeCuir, Alvin was raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he developed a lifelong passion for education, service, and community. He was preceded in death by his dear first wife Rita Ann DeCuir, his cherished daughter, Jocelyn Fontenot Lange, and his beloved siblings: Eula Mae Mathis Bertrand, Delores Hornsby, Frank DeCuir Jr., Dallas DeCuir, Carolyn Bassett, and Patricia Honoré.
Alvin leaves behind a loving family who will forever treasure his wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Mary “Tee” DeCuir; his brother, Ronald DeCuir Sr.; and his children, Jerome Fontenot (his former wife, Philomena), Angela Jones (her husband, Pat), Reinette Gills (her husband, Terry), Rosalyn Honoré (her husband, Charles Jr.), Julie DeCuir, Alvin DeCuir Jr. (his wife, Pansy), Doyle Fontenot (his wife, Gina), Darlene Perry (her husband, Donte), Shawn DeCuir (his wife, Marita), and Jennifer DeCuir (her husband, Winston
Jr.); 25 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren, with the family joyfully anticipating the arrival of additional generations to come.
Education was both Dr. DeCuir's profession and his calling. He attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic School through the eighth grade before graduating from McKinley High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Southern University, a master’s degree plus 30 hours in School Leadership from Louisiana State University, and a doctorate degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Vanderbilt University.
While attending Southern University, Alvin was enrolled in the University's Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, showing an early commitment to leadership and service. In addition to his university military experience, he honorably served his country in the United States Army as a Personnel Clerk (MOS-71L), rising through the enlisted ranks to the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7). His military service reflected the discipline, integrity, and dedication that would become hallmarks of his life and career.
Throughout his distinguished career in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, Dr. DeCuir served as a classroom teacher, principal, and district supervisor, leaving a lasting impact on countless students, educators, and families. His career included service at Zion City Elementary School, Park Elementary School, Merrydale Elementary School, and District supervisor of Area C. Later in his career, he briefly taught in Centerville, Mississippi, where he inspired students through his love of mathematics and science. His professional journey came full circle when he returned home to serve as Principal of St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, the very school where his educational journey began.
Known for his integrity, quiet strength, and unwavering commitment to excellence, Dr. DeCuir believed that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. He dedicated his life to improving educational opportunities for others and mentoring future generations of educators.
Outside of his professional life, Alvin found immense joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed traveling, faithfully read the daily newspaper to stay informed, and cherished every opportunity to gather with his family. His greatest pride was watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow and flourish. Another of Alvin's greatest joys was hosting the First Saturday Rosary Group at the home he shared with his beloved wife, Mary “
Tee.” He cherished the fellowship and spiritual devotion these gatherings fostered. His enthusiasm for the tradition grew so deeply that, in later years, he gladly assumed much of the planning and preparation, ensuring that each gathering was a welcoming and meaningful experience for all who attended.
Dr. Alvin DeCuir's legacy is one of faith, service, education, and family. Whether serving his country in uniform, leading schools, mentoring educators, or guiding his family, he exemplified a life of purpose, humility, and compassion. His influence will continue to be felt through the thousands of lives he touched as a soldier, educator, administrator, mentor, and devoted patriarch.

Your kindness and dedication will always be remembered with deep gratitude.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated on August 4, 2026, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 9150 Highland Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70810. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. The Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Louisiana National Cemetery, 303 West Mount Pleasant Road, Zachary, LA 70791.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Jude Catholic Church in honor of Dr. Alvin Francis DeCuir Sr., continuing his lifelong commitment to serving others.
