Born in New Iberia on August 10, 1986, Derek James Albert grew up attending New Iberia Senior High School and was the only son of John and Julie Bourgeois. He was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, and friend—basically everyone’s favorite person to call when something needed fixing.

He had a gift for compassion and warmth, making others feel seen, valued, and cared for. Derek’s kindness was quiet but deeply felt; he never hesitated to help a friend, offer a smile, or share a moment of joy. He was a kind, gentle, and loving soul whose presence brought comfort—and the promise of laughter that could brighten even the darkest day. He will be remembered for his generous heart, the deep love he had for his sons and family including his loyal “#1 homie,” his dog Jonah, and a sense of humor that could get him out of most situations he probably got himself into.

Derek is survived by his loving parents, John and Julie Bourgeois; children, Rylin Padgett, Griffin and Legend Albert; siblings, Christine Funk (Kelly) and Kassi Bourgeois; nieces Violet and Scarlett Young, Amelia and Kennedy Funk. He also leaves behind special family members Brooklyn Belanger, Tony Walters, Alayah and Mason Gary and Zae Romero.

Derek is preceded in death by his grandmother Patricia Hebert, grandfather Willard Bourgeois (Pop), grandmother Sharon Albert, and uncles Jimmy Bourgeois and Dwight Bonin.

Derek immeasurably touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him. Though life feels forever changed without him, the love he shared remains with us—steadfast, unforgettable, and eternal. May Derek rest in peace and may his legacy of kindness continue to guide us.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends of Derek James Albert who prefer to provide a memorial contribution may do so. The family will use these to honor Derek's life and memory. Please continue to keep the family in your thoughts throughout this challenging time.
