Age 75, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, January 29, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 22, 1946 in Holly, West Virginia to Almeida (Hern) and George Mays.

Jim served four years in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal. He was also a member of the Coldwater Jaycees. He worked for Western Rubber Company prior to earning two associate’s degrees. Jim worked as an IT consultant for Kellogg’s, and later transferred to Ford, where he worked for 17 years before he retired.

He was a devoted and loving husband for over 50 years and doting father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Jim was also very generous, neighborly, and would help anyone in need. Many enjoyed his demeanor as well, since he could always make everyone laugh with his sarcastic humor.

Jim was always the green thumb of the family, loved gardening, and had a passion for photography and using his telescope to study astronomy. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, watching West Virginia and the Bears play, and spending time with family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife Leannette (Sowers) Mays, daughters: Anjanette (Paul) Murdock and Jaime (Scott) Rowland; grandchildren: Rachel and David Murdock, Nathan Thompson, Ryan, Paige, and Kristopher Rowland, Christina (Michael) Collins; four great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary McLaughlin, Sharon (Johnny) Curry, Margaret (Doug) Pauley; and brothers: William (Jill) Mays, and John (Betty) Mays.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Betty (Issac) Thompson, Barbara (Leonard) Sloan, Sally Johnson, Patricia (Jim) Sloane, brothers: George O. Mays Jr., and Steven Mays, and brother-in-law Bill McLaughlin.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at London Township Cemetery, Milan, Michigan on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Any financial contributions may be made here to assist the family with service expenses.
